Monroe’s Last Nudes Lohan Redux
MONROE’S LAST NUDES LOHAN REDUX
Looking at the New York Magazine Nude Lohan prints, as an artist who’s taken many reference photoshoots, I felt the pictures only told half the story. I needed to see how they compared to the original Marilyn shots and which Marilyn photos were used for reference. Just seeing the Lohan photos didn’t give me any perspective.
I painstakingly (it was fun) went through the original Bert Stern / Monroe “the last sitting” shot-by-shot and figured out (to my best guess) which pictures he referenced for the Lohan shoot. (see below)

How Lohan was able to take poses and expressions that are fun and alive in 1962 and make them look so dull and contrived in 2008 is amazing. Probably the one time when a little champagne tumble off the sobriety wagon would have been a good career move. . .

This master painter, sculptor and illustrator from Strasbourg, France has the stylistic graphics that range from fashion, history, and advertising. Each illustrated compartment are very different. His portfolio is outstanding and pushes the envelope for the ability of illustrators to turn out more than just line and marker drawings.
Antoine Helbert’s portraits unleash a dark stare into the surreal surroundings of his models. He paints an ambiance so startling, you can’t help but stare. It should be no surprise that I relay he is also the scenic painter for Strasbourg’s Opera. His technique is oil on canvas for rich colors with eye-popping light sources.
His website contains a gorgeous collection of all his mediums and work. Antoine has created many posters for exhibitions, music festivals, and cultural events. He is a rising French star aiming high on his illustrative canvas of possibilities.

Megan Baker has been taking photographs since she took hold of the Polaroid at age four. In addition to concert photography, Baker’s photo focus is on abandoned houses and small towns that have suffered economic distress. Decampment is an incredible series that takes us inside and out along this journey. The light, the colours, the mood – these photos linger. And we almost hate to bring this up, but Megan Baker happens to be sixteen-years-old.

Kimora Lee Simmons Files for Divorce
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kimora Lee Simmons has already moved on, but she took steps to make it official by filing for divorce from her husband of seven years, entertainment mogul Russell Simmons.
Although the couple separated in March 2006, Kimora Lee Simmons just filed divorce papers Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court. The 32-year-old Baby Phat fashion designer and reality TV star cited irreconcilable differences.
She and Russell Simmons, 50, have two daughters: 8-year-old Ming Lee and 5-year-old Aoki Lee. Kimora Lee Simmons is seeking legal and physical custody of the children. She requested that Russell Simmons be granted “reasonable child visitation … accompanied at all times by the children’s nanny and security personnel.”
Russell Simmons co-founded Def Jam records and created Phat Farm clothing and HBO’s “Def Comedy Jam.”
Kimora Lee Simmons has been dating actor Djimon Honsou.

via Denimology: A couple of days ago I posted a promotional shots of Kate Moss wearing a pair of jeans from her Spring/Summer 2008 collection for TopShop. And as if to prove that she does actually wear the clothes she designs here she is in the same pair of pinstripe jeans on a recent shopping trip to the Prada store in London.

Vintage Portraits from the 1980s by Jeannette Montgomery Barron are the topic of an exhibition that opens today at ClampArt in New York. Barron captures some of the most significant artists of the time in moments of great calm that exude an intimacy, made even softer by the use of natural light. These are black and white photographs that the viewer wants to step into, into a place where there may be a chance to see the artist a little less cloaked.

One of the more interesting compilation projects of last year was the Buffet Libre Verbena Selected mixtape. The idea was to take some of the larger up-and-coming electronic acts and ask them to contribute one of their favorite songs into a full length piece produced by Buffet Libre. 15,000 downloads within less than 3 months later, they started thinking that maybe it might be time for a follow-up. Today I was sent the second compilation in their series, with tracks courtesy from everyone from Cut Copy to The Glimmers to Girl Talk. It’s really interesting to see what some of these groups picked as their songs.
Buffet Libre DJs - Verbena Selected 2

For another experiment, we have us the Verbena Rewind project, where the Buffet Libre DJ’s went around requesting a whole bunch of bloggers, including Pardon My Freedom, Get Weird Turn Pro, IHeartComix, D Squared and a whole lot of great music sources (including me ;oP) a single 80’s track for another mix. And the results are great, each saying a lot about the individual people who participated and how early music influenced them. It’s all very reflective. I chose “Six Different Ways” for my single because I’m a huge Cure fan and because that song is totally awesome. Compiled into a two part mixtape, there are separate files and tracklistings. Enjoy.

Toronto-based painter Margaux Williamson is currently showing at the Marvelli Gallery in New York. The show is called The Girls show Dostoyevsky the new darkness, and Williamson’s viewers are led into a narrative that is soft and dark, with the interpretation of each adjective left open. The darkness is certainly present in the above painting, Girl, but for a painting so black, is it really dark? And the chains that hold the sledding girls in the painting that bears the name of the exhibition - are they hindering or helping, in the marshmallow snow? And OK or Self-portrait as Future Buddha, how can these paintings not endear themselves to us?

That’s just awesome. Use the search field at the bottom left corner to search what you’re looking for (in this case, “sex” or “art”!).

Kelly Tunstall’s paintings and illustrations of tall thin young women are almost like fashion design sketches. Tunstall’s heroines (based on friends, family, stylish women she sees walking down the street) are all beautiful, sexy and ladylike, to better show off their glamour dresses, ballet wear or lingerie. Yet some do sport quirks as well, maybe two heads here or a pair of antlers or bunny ears there, just to keep things interesting.

Gnarls Barkley, the eccentric powerhouse consisting of equal parts producer extraordinaire, Dangermouse and soulful rapper/singer Cee Lo are at it again. Surfacing last week, ‘Run’ is rumored to be a new recording that is among a few dozen handfuls in the running for the sophomore record, ‘The Odd Couple’, which is slated for a April release. We’ll see if this ends up on the finished record. If it doesn’t, it’s another testament to their talent that they can throw these kinds of tracks away.
Through the ’90s Cee-Lo got his start in the ATL rap group Goodie Mob, of which he is still a member (alhtough individual members are currently pursuing solo projects). For me, Goodie Mob really helped solidify ATL as a force to be reckoned with—in a time when far-reaching rap records were dominated by NY and LA. I ran these tracks into the ground on weekly basis for years. Goodie Mob is a very different animal to Gnarls Barkley, but that’s what makes Cee-Lo such a dynamic talent.

We Love Colors Tights by Cool Hunting
by Ami Kealoha

by Sheena Sood
While New York fashion designers Proenza Schouler and are adding brilliant spring-like colors to their Fall/Winter 2008 collections with sherbet colored tights and printed stockings on the runways this week, why not slip on a pair of bright leggings courtesy of We Love Colors? The quality tights are opaque and are now made from 80 Denier Nylon/Lycra MicroFiber for a thicker, softer feel. The best part though, is that the tights are available in 45 different solid colors; choose from hues such as pastel mint, olive green, neon pink, lavender, or rubine (a kind of burgundy).

Fresh patterns like stripes, zig-zags, and polka dots are also available in the same 45 hues. Those who aren’t afraid of an intense color statement can try the unique “Splash Color” tights (pictured), which have a vibrant tie-dyed-splashed-paint effect.
We Love Colors offers plus-sized tights, knee and thigh-highs, fishnets, gloves, mini-dresses, leotards, and styles for men and children as well. All products are available online or by phone. Solid tights are $12.50 and splash-colored cost $16 to get us through the rest of winter with flying colors.

Mid-century modernist architecture as seen by Lucy Williams results in mixed media works of art that combine a crafting style with a sleek topic. Williams creates low-relief forms of homes, commercial establishments and public buildings with materials such as Perspex, fabric, thread, pillow stuffing and card. The Study, above, is based on a case study house in L.A. by Craig Ellwood, whereas Hans Blumenthal is the picture of a Bauhaus home nestled among the trees. The Lighting Showroom takes its inspiration from a lighting store in Milan.

Peter Sís grew up in Communist Prague, drawing on the sly and reading forbidden books. His work as an animator allowed him to travel and eventually seek asylum in the U.S. When Sís moved to New York in 1984, he started his career as the author/illustrator of children’s books. His illustrations are rich, layered tapestries of incredibly fine pen and pencil work, detailing works of his creation that stem from his experiences and observations. Freedom of Expression is Peter Sís’s first New York exhibition and is a good sampling of work that reinforces the importance of freedom and a reminder to viewers to avoid taking it for granted.
