One of the more interesting compilation projects of last year was the Buffet Libre Verbena Selected mixtape. The idea was to take some of the larger up-and-coming electronic acts and ask them to contribute one of their favorite songs into a full length piece produced by Buffet Libre. 15,000 downloads within less than 3 months later, they started thinking that maybe it might be time for a follow-up. Today I was sent the second compilation in their series, with tracks courtesy from everyone from Cut Copy to The Glimmers to Girl Talk. It’s really interesting to see what some of these groups picked as their songs.
Buffet Libre DJs - Verbena Selected 2

For another experiment, we have us the Verbena Rewind project, where the Buffet Libre DJ’s went around requesting a whole bunch of bloggers, including Pardon My Freedom, Get Weird Turn Pro, IHeartComix, D Squared and a whole lot of great music sources (including me ;oP) a single 80’s track for another mix. And the results are great, each saying a lot about the individual people who participated and how early music influenced them. It’s all very reflective. I chose “Six Different Ways” for my single because I’m a huge Cure fan and because that song is totally awesome. Compiled into a two part mixtape, there are separate files and tracklistings. Enjoy.

FLOSSTRADAMUS @ Sonotheque - January 12, 2008

FLOSSTRADAMUS:
2 DJs, 3 turntables, and lots of people getting buck on the dancefloor. Forget what you think you know about spinning records. In 2005, DJs no longer need be characterized by n arrow labels like “hip hop,” ghetto tech,” or “house.” Jocks can sweep across all of those genres, mash them up together, and create something wholly new–something that can’t be easily pigeonholed.
Take it from Flosstradamus, the newly formed but already dynamic DJ duo comprised of Josh Young (J2K) and Curt Cameruci (Autobot). Like the emerging generation of post-millennium dancefloor crashers of the same ilk (see: Major Taylor, locally, and Diplo and Low Budget of Hollertronix nationally), Flosstradamus are more interested in getting the crowd moving–and grinding and sweating and bumping and shaking–than impressing any music elitists in the audience. They cut through genres indiscriminately, likely to play during any given half-hour: Le Tigre’s “Deceptacon,” Killer Mike’s “My Chrome” and the Cure’s “Lovesong”–perhaps sequentially, if you’re lucky.
With two men, a three-turntable setup, and an impressive catalogue of sounds (Young and Cameruci use programs called Serato and Final Scratch, respectively, which allows them to transfer all of their vinyl–at least 20 crates’ worth–to MP3s and treat them as records on the turntables).

Last night went to Flosstradamus & Pase Rock at the Abbey Pub. I’d caught a set @ Sonotheque a few weeks back and loved the crowd…Once again I was excited to be packed into a space with so many rad ass people…Everyone dancing - having fun…The night couldn’t have been better and then in walks Kid Sister for a killer live performance!!!
Thank you Flosstradamus, Pase Rock (even though I almost took you out when I slipped down the stairs)….& Kid Sister….

Given that his tunes are requested (and more importantly, played) daily on Australia’s biggest indie radio stations and that his live acts manage to sell out within hours, it’s somewhat surprising that Kiwi-turned-Aussie Popolice is still a completely down-to-earth guy content with creating tunes that cause even the poser kids to get up and cut loose. CH caught up with Popolice on the cusp of international acclaim to talk about pop, posers and pizza.
Who is Popolice?
A one-man band that originated in Auckland, NZ and now exists in Melbourne, Australia.
How, why and when did it start?
Popolice started in 1997 as a result of me not being good enough at sports and too good at computer games.
Biggest influences?
My influences are extremely varied…common reference points are lots of bands from New Zealand’s Flying Nun record label and My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth, Pavement—obvious indie-pop influences to be honest—although Sydney’s Gerling might well be one of my biggest influences, particularly their album When Young Terrorists Chase The Sun (2001)…mixing samples, pop, noise, techno, acoustic, rock, whatever….
What have you eaten today?
Fatoush salad I made based on a recipe I learned from working at a cooking school. I eat two minute noodles too—most flavors—but one has to be healthy if one is to rock!
What’s playing in the background?
Listening to the new Justice album, getting hooked on this indie/disco sound—once again, [I'm] behind the times. I first heard about Nirvana one week after Kurt Cobain died. Whatever’s happening now, I’ll be an expert in three years.
If you could play a soundtrack to one film, what would it be?
Woodenhead, a New Zealand film by Florian Habicht. All the dialog and music was recorded before filming even took place. The actors acted to a soundtrack—not pretentious at all, though it may seem by description. It’s a really moving and surreal film like a fairy tale.
Biggest compliment?
Thanks for the add.
Where to from here?
Experimenting more with electronic music but still keep the noisy guitar element there. Not sure, maybe back to NZ for a bit. Maybe New York—who knows? For now I’m more than happy to go to Barkley Square in suburban Melbourne for a slice of Margerita Pizza.
post from Gap In the Void:
[One of the drawings I did for Seth Godin's latest book, "The Dip".]
Social Objects and Homeless People
So I’ve been thinking some more about Jyri’s Five Principles of Social Objects, especially how they apply to gapingvoid:
1. You should be able to define the social object your service is built around. In gapingvoid’s case, that would be the cartoons for the most part. The straight writing part I’m less concerned about.
2. Define your verbs that your users perform on the objects. For instance, eBay has buy and sell buttons. It’s clear what the site is for.
The verb that springs to mind is “share”. Not only do people re-publish them on their blogs, they’re also allowed to upload them onto other media for free: posters, t-shirts, stickers, whatever works for them. My licensing terms are pretty open.
3. How can people share the objects?
The key word here is “re-publish”. Microsoft’s Steve Clayton is probably the most well-known of my “re-publishers”, as he’s always using the Blue Monster cartoon for different things.
4. Turn invitations into gifts.
Again, the Blue Monster cartoon would serve as a good example. Microsoft employees hand out Blue Monster schwag as an invitation to start a conversation about Microsoft. The Blue Monster’s main function is not about the message, the Blue Monster is about the social gesture.
5. Charge the publishers, not the spectators.
D’accord. The people who put the cartoons on their business cards are doing the paying, not the people receiving them.
Somewhere along the line I figured out the easiest products to market are objects with “Sociability” baked-in. Products that allow people to have “conversations” with other folk. Seth Godin calls this quality “remarkablilty”.For example: A street beggar holding out an ordinary paper cup cup won’t start a conversation. A street beggar holding out a Starbucks cup will. I know this to be true, because it happened to me and a friend the other day, as we were walking down the street and a guy asked us for some spare change. Afterwards, as we were commenting about the rather sad paradox of a homeless guy plying his trade with a “luxury” coffee cup, my friend said, “Starbucks should be paying that guy.”
Actually, my friend is wrong. Starbuck’s doesn’t need to be paying the homeless guy. Because Starbucks created a social object out of a paper cup, the homeless guy does their marketing for free, whether he knows it or not.
Although I suspect he does. I suspect somewhere along the line the poor chap figured out that holding out a Starbucks cup gets him more attention [and spare change] than an ordinary cup. And suddenly we’re seeing social reciprocity between a homeless person and a large corporation, without money ever changing hands. Whatever your views are on the plight of homeless people, this is “Indirect Marketing” at its finest.
And of course, the way I market my cartoons and my other various enterprises is not all that dissimilar…
[Bonus Link:] A wonderfully thought-provoking podcast interview of Seth Godin. Disclosure: He kindly gives me a brief mention about 23.15 minutes into it.
Next Friday go check out the artwork of Michelle Phillips, Brent Houzenga, and Seth Nosbusch.

**Resident Artists - June 22 from 7pm-12**
This is a casual, open house event. The idea came about because we live in a house full of artists. Michelle Phillips, Brent Houzenga, and Seth Nosbusch are all visual artists and Josh Boyd is a spoken word poet.
People are welcome to bring an art piece of their own to share, or just enjoy what’s already there. All of our art will be displayed throughout the house and there will also be spoken word performances from Josh Boyd as well as Johnny Armani. There will also be live music TBA.
Everyone is welcome. The Party will last throughout the night.

The Des Moines Art Center & Art Noir Present:
Catalyst State - Iowa Design Weekend

More details coming soon:

Young art lovers plan to showcase Iowa design this fall

Nathan Hewitt and Art Noir have big, bold plans for 2007.
Namely, for a weekend in November when the Des Moines Art Center’s Art Noir Presents: Catalyst State Iowa Design Weekend.
The two-day event will showcase Iowa’s design talents and will be the culmination of nearly a year of planning by Art Noir, a young professional organization started nine months ago as a way to promote the Des Moines Art Center to a new generation. The event is still in the planning phases.
Hewitt, the 27-year-old co-president of Art Noir, said Catalyst State is a huge undertaking that will feature Iowa (or former Iowan) designers. The focus is on four main components of the design field: fashion, graphics, built environments and objects. There will be lectures from top professionals in the industry, fashion shows and an award ceremony.
With the Iowa Caucuses just a few months later, Hewitt sees the event as a chance to capitalize on interest in Des Moines and really make a splash.
“We want this to get national attention,” he said. “We want people from New York and L.A. at the event.”
Interest in Art Noir has exceeded expectations so far. Hewitt said there are about 150 members. While many members work or dabble in the arts or creative outlets, bankers and lawyers and people in all walks of life are joining.
“There is a lot of energy, a lot of fresh energy,” he said. “There are a lot of young people involved in the arts and creative community in Des Moines, and we are the people who could really help shape the future of Des Moines in those areas.”
As for benefits, Hewitt said members get early previews to art exhibits and often get to meet artists and curators the public may not receive. There are also occasional social events.
If you’re an active member of the Des Moines Art Center, you can be a member of Art Noir. Eventually, there may be separate membership fees, but right now the $35 annual Art Center membership fee is the only cost to join the organization.
What they do: Promote the Des Moines Art Center to young professionals in Des Moines and encourage creative and artistic endeavors in Des Moines.
Membership: About 150.
Requirements: Must be an active Des Moines Art Center member, which costs $35 a year. Most members are in their 20s and 30s.
How often they meet: Monthly board meetings and social events, often timed around an exhibit at the Art Center. Art Noir often has exclusive, early access to artists and exhibits.
How to join: Go to the Des Moines Art Center, 4700 Grand Ave., go to an Art Noir event, go to desmoinesartcenter.org or email artnoir@desmoinesartcenter.org.
Go to an event: The next Art Noir event is the Black Maria Film Festival at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Art Center’s Levitt Auditorium. The film festival is a juried competition of bold, contemporary films that stops in cities across the country. Art Noir hosts an afterparty at 25th St. Cafe.
I think we should have one in Des Moines - what do you think?
MTV has made the process of painting look cool, with their “Art Battles” show. Here’s what it is..
“Art Battles is a live-art competition where artists create work side- by-side in front of a live audience. For six years Art Battles have been a platform for talented artists to showcase their skills in and around NYC in a most unique setting and under tremendous pressure to perform. There’s no time to sleep on your ideas, no chance to mull the nuance of each brush stroke. No, with Art Battles, time is as much of the essence as is inspiration and talent.” MTV
There’s a video of it online here and you can vote for your favorite artist here. I voted for Ben Angotti.
It’s everything that being an artist isn’t, but that’s fine with me. It’s hard to make artists look interesting as creating a painting isn’t much of a spectator sport. It’s fun for the artist creating the work, but I doubt an artist would ever sell many tickets if he began painting on stage.
Working on starting an org in Des Moines that supports the fashion Industry here.
If you’d like to be involved, send me an e-mail w/your name, phone, email, and any relevant info (website, fashion interest, bio, background, whatever)…
