Monroe’s Last Nudes Lohan Redux
MONROE’S LAST NUDES LOHAN REDUX
Looking at the New York Magazine Nude Lohan prints, as an artist who’s taken many reference photoshoots, I felt the pictures only told half the story. I needed to see how they compared to the original Marilyn shots and which Marilyn photos were used for reference. Just seeing the Lohan photos didn’t give me any perspective.
I painstakingly (it was fun) went through the original Bert Stern / Monroe “the last sitting” shot-by-shot and figured out (to my best guess) which pictures he referenced for the Lohan shoot. (see below)

How Lohan was able to take poses and expressions that are fun and alive in 1962 and make them look so dull and contrived in 2008 is amazing. Probably the one time when a little champagne tumble off the sobriety wagon would have been a good career move. . .

Megan Baker has been taking photographs since she took hold of the Polaroid at age four. In addition to concert photography, Baker’s photo focus is on abandoned houses and small towns that have suffered economic distress. Decampment is an incredible series that takes us inside and out along this journey. The light, the colours, the mood – these photos linger. And we almost hate to bring this up, but Megan Baker happens to be sixteen-years-old.

Vintage Portraits from the 1980s by Jeannette Montgomery Barron are the topic of an exhibition that opens today at ClampArt in New York. Barron captures some of the most significant artists of the time in moments of great calm that exude an intimacy, made even softer by the use of natural light. These are black and white photographs that the viewer wants to step into, into a place where there may be a chance to see the artist a little less cloaked.

125 Magazine states that they are the only magazine in the world, which acts as a completely unbiased photography gallery, open to both emerging and established artists, and making affordable art available to all. That’s just awesome. Use the search field at the bottom left corner to search what you’re looking for (in this case, “sex” or “art”!).

Daniel Everett
by Lost At E Minor via Coolhunting

We love the photographic work of Chicago-based Daniel Everett. His work captures desolate environments but with a sense of hope and optimism. His work-in-progress series, “Departure,” deals with the “dislocation and alienation of modern utilitarian landscape. Sort of a study of these ubiquitous transitory spaces (or non-spaces) and our relationship to them.”

It is not common when I encounter an artist and think, “Okay, I clearly don’t understand all the good things going on here, but there is more talent in front of me than I have the ability to comprehend.”

Kate Moss was photographed for a Donna Karan campaign — for the first time ever. The images were shot in LA last week by Mert and Marcus and will feature Donna’s Spring “Nueva York”-themed collection. Lucky for us, a pesky paparazzo was on set, take a gander this-a-way to see Kate in action…or inaction, whichever may be the case.

KayLynn Deveney recently published a book of photographs portraying the simple components that made up the moments of an old man in Wales. The Day-to-Day Life of Albert Hastings is a gentle collection of photographs that manages to distil so much life and emotion. Albert Hastings would probably be appalled to think that anyone could associate poignancy or sentimentality with these pictures, but that it comes out is testament to our frailty as viewers. Did the photographer recognize this and move in closer? Whatever the case may be, slowly perusing this series is a good way to pass a few moments in contemplation.

>> Here’s a little blast from the past for you: Mario Sorrenti, photographed by Kate Moss, I assume in the Moss-Sorrenti years. It’s kind of fun to see the photographer in front of the camera, the model behind, pressing the shutter button. Doesn’t hurt that Sorrenti was quite the looker (he used to be a model, too).

Approaching Nowhere: The Franchised Landscape is a series of bleak photographs by Jeff Brouws. This collection shows an ever-changing landscape as farmland and country spaces are taken over by big box commercial development that have no guarantee of success. The glare of the fluorescent light and empty cashiers’ stations of a closing store is a sad image of an “I told you so” moment, yet the construction takes place over and over again, so that soon, all blue skies and green spaces will be bisected by the golden arches.

Full Story

School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Click Chic: The Fine Art of Fashion Photography,” an exhibition documenting the vitality of fashion photography as a vehicle for creative expression, formal experimentation and social commentary.
On view will be nearly 50 images by six emerging and established photographers based in New York who have created distinctive bodies of work in fashion: Roderick Angle, Guy Aroch, Maki Kawakita, Ryan Michael Kelly, Chiun-Kai Shih and Sarah Silver. With cultural reference points as rich and varied as Art Nouveau, Buddhism, film noir, modern dance and Japanese Kabuki theater, they have made fashion photography their primary practice, applying a conceptual and formal rigor traditionally associated with fine art.
“Because they’re originally conceived and created to appear in magazines and advertisements, fashion photographs are often considered disposable,” said exhibition curator Dan Halm. “I’m hoping to change that by highlighting some exceptional images that hold their own as works of art.”
Fashion has been fertile ground for innovative photography for decades, but the lines between fine art and commercial photography have blurred in recent years as more and more photographers have found an outlet in both realms. The 1990s saw a marked increase in advertising and editorial work by art-world mainstays like Cindy Sherman and Nan Goldin. “Click Chic” considers a group of formally-trained photographers who came of age since the 1990s and have worked mainly on commission for clients in the fashion industry.
The exhibition includes a selection of never-before-seen photographs created as personal work as well as images that have appeared in editorial features and advertising campaigns around the world. Both bodies of work engage the medium’s history and reflect contemporary developments in landscape, portraiture and still life photography.
‘SEEING THE UNSEEN’ ~ Photographs by HAROLD E. EDGERTON at SMoCA
Aug 25, 2007 04:24:41 GMT

Scottsdale, Arizona - This fall, the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art [SMoCA] will unveil 50 oversized photographic prints by Dr. Harold E. Edgerton, a pioneer of advancing photographical techniques that revolutionized the way artists use film. Edgerton’s use of stroboscopy—literally a method producing enough light in controlled flashes of short duration to effectively “stop motion” on photographic film—proved to be the foundation for the development of electronic speed flash used in modern cameras. On exhibition September 15, 2007 – January 6, 2008.

Here’s one last shot from the Atlanta Prison. I really liked the light and arrangement of the tables here. Seems they had never moved since the last time the inmates had eaten on them.
Well, this was going to be the last shot of this place, but I just can’t help myself… I got some of my film developed last night, so it seems there’s more to come. I think I will go ahead and give it a rest for now though, but don’t be surprised if some film shots show up in the next couple day/weeks.
Also, I’ll go ahead and give one last shout out to Otto, for making this series possible. Check out his stuff for sure if you haven’t already. He gives a much darker and mysterious view of the prison in general – definitely a cool comparison. Also, for those who are interested, the entire set is posted on flickr, so give it a look. Thanks everyone for the extremely positive comments on this series…
Now, back to regularly scheduled programming (if there was such a thing)…

Artist Statement :
My photography is more about the people than anything. Without the people, there are no photos. Over the past year I have been fortunate to meet and learn about some of the most real people possible. I’ve shot in multi-million dollar homes as well as the poorest project houses around. I learn from every experience. A thank you to those who I have met along the way, and for those I am yet to meet, I look forward to it.
Blessings

They get high, get naked, and jump on trampolines. They skinny-dip in mountain lakes and stare searchingly at themselves in bathroom mirrors. They giggle and hug. They shoplift and puke and crash together on dingy mattresses on the floor. They are the cool, giddy, beautiful young things who populate the pictorial world of photographer Ryan McGinley.

From Fauxreel: “This image with the Punker Girl was put up at Rockhouse, which is a concert venue in Camden. Apparently it’s where the first punk show took place. While I was putting it up, one of the trustee members saw me,
commented me and said that it would stay permanently because it was the perfect fit to comment on the history of the facility. I thought that was cool and a definite motivator.”
